Zellige Fireplace Tiles
A fireplace surround is a small area that gets a lot of attention, which makes it a good place for handmade zellige. The glossy glaze reflects firelight, and the tile works on both modern and traditional fireplaces.
Where zellige goes on a fireplace
Zellige is used on the surround (the wall around the opening) and on the front face of the hearth. It is not made for the inside of the firebox, which needs firebrick or another material rated for direct flame. Ask your installer to use a thinset and grout suitable for the heat of your fireplace.
Shapes and patterns
- 4×4 squares in a straight grid for a clean, modern surround.
- Bejmat 2×6 in a vertical stack or herringbone to frame the opening.
- Hexagons for a more graphic look.
Colours that work
Dark glazes such as Carbon Black, Slate Grey and Night Blue make the fireplace the anchor of the room. Brown and earth tones such as Burnt Sugar feel warm. A white zellige surround looks fresh in a light room.
