A zellige backsplash is the simplest way to bring handmade tile into a kitchen. The wall is small, it is at eye level, and the glossy, uneven glaze catches light from windows and under-cabinet lamps all day. Every tile on this page is pressed, glazed and cut by hand in Fez, Morocco.

White and cream zellige keeps a kitchen bright and lets the texture do the work. Green zellige pairs well with brass and wood. Brown glazes such as Burnt Sugar hide splashes and suit warm, dark kitchens. Blue zellige is the most traditionally Moroccan.
Zellige is usually installed with very thin grout joints, about 1 to 2 mm, so the tiles almost touch. Because thickness varies from tile to tile, ask your installer to back-butter each tile and to mix tiles from several boxes as they go, so the colour variation spreads evenly. Sealing the grout makes the wall easier to clean near the stove and sink. Plan for about 10% extra tile to allow for cuts and for setting aside tiles you do not like.
