A zellige shower is one of the most popular ways to use handmade tile. Water running over the glossy, uneven glaze makes the colour shift and shine, and the tile is at home in wet rooms: zellige has been used around fountains and hammams in Morocco for centuries.

As with any tiled shower, the wall behind the tile must be waterproofed with a membrane before tiling. The glazed face of zellige resists water, but the clay body and edges are porous, so set the tiles in a full bed of thinset with no hollow spots, and use a quality grout and sealer. Re-seal the grout as your installer recommends.
White zellige gives a bright, spa-like shower. Green and blue glazes look like water and suit brass fixtures. Warm glazes such as Amber make a shower feel like a hammam.
